Examining from both eastern and western lenses, Hung-Ju Kan’s work explores an innovative technique inspired by traditional Chinese landscape painting. However, instead of using the traditional ink brush, Kan incorporates the floral patterns commonly found in bedsheets, curtains and other everyday objects from his native Tainan City and various shades of colors to portray reality and virtuality, creating an unique rhythm and flow to his work. In doing so, Kan expresses a cure for nostalgia by re-organizing layers of fragmented memories and emotional sustenances into a diverse, inclusive, and expandable blanket.
