By drawing from her extensive academic background, which includes three master’s degrees and a PhD, Molly A. Greene has been creating a complex visual language in which living organisms are rendered with the alien and hyper-polished perfection of scientific prototypes. In Basic Pleasure Models, the artist depicts a seemingly simple arrangement of purple flowers. She is not concerned with capturing the likeness of any flower in particular as much as presenting an ultra-symmetrical and thus unnatural concept of flowers existing in an alternate, science-fiction reality whereby rootless mechanical blossoms fan across the scene with robotic precision. That this painting of a most mundane subject matter—one that normally elicits a sense of emotionality and comfort—was created during a time that had most people question their knowledge of the natural world, is all the more befitting.
[Please note this work is scheduled to be included in an exhibition at 'here' in Pittsburgh from December 2020 - January 2021. It will be available for shipping or pick-up at the conclusion of the exhibition.]
