The Cuban-born, Miami-based artist William Osorio has developed a distinct style in which his past and present converge to create a hybrid visual language. For the artist, the paintings are portals to invite questioning, as opposed to provide meaning or answers. In that regard, each painting, like the current painting, is a catalyst to contemplate one’s fragility and explore the formation of identity. The latter is enhanced by the harmonized co-existence of primary-colored geometric plains that emphasize the flatness of the work, and, on the other hand, balanced by the thick impasto and heavy brushstrokes that create a lush, tangible ‘skin’ on the surface of the canvas. The multiplicity of hands and faces further disrupt a linear understanding of the subject, subverting an allegedly straight portrait into a three-dimensional study that captures the depth of the human experience. The confluence of contradictions invites viewers to embrace the unknown and unresolved, and find beauty in the journey of becoming.
