The inspiration to paint for California-based artist Aaron Elvis Jupin began as a child in the 1990s and early 2000’s. Be it era-defining cartoons like The Simpsons, local graffiti or skateboard decals, the artist developed an early penchant for graphic art. During his college years the artist lived with his uncle, artist Andrew Brandou, who counterbalanced Jupin’s academic training with an unorthodox approach that prompted him to embrace a less literal approach to his subject matter. By drawing completely from memory—be it from his early childhood or much more recent events—the artist culls disparate visual cues into a single frame, begetting a whimsical work of art that becomes a de facto Rorschach test for the viewers. In the current painting, a nocturnal image of the globe is seen catching fire while propped on a lightbox. The surreal scene is grounded by the shadows of a ceiling fan and window blinds, emblems of middle-class comforts, lending a sense of domestic banality to an otherwise beautifully haunting scene.
