With little time left before turning a milestone birthday, Bronx-born artist James Reyes wanted to create a painting to commemorate the experience. Painted earlier this year, the canvas features an imagined birthday party as the artist dives into his cake, surrounded by his loved ones. Swirls of candy-colored twirl around the central compositional in a vertiginous haze of merriment and celebration. Part fantasy and part reality, the painting is a wishful memento of a revered, personal milestone.
