Presented during the artist's first solo exhibition at NY gallery Gordon Robichaux, artist and celebrated musician Stephanie Crawford has chosen watercolors instead of oil paint to depict her still-life compositions. For the artist, watercolors are "murderous" for their unforgivable nature to show every mark. However, the artist's long history as a jazz vocalist has prepared her for the medium. "You can't control it," she has said, "you can try, but the watercolor does what it wants...Water complies with gravity and parallels the improvisation of jazz." Capturing decorative items--including artificial flowers--arranged in her own home, the artist creates free-spirited, spontaneous visuals that burst with color, beauty and vitality.
