Brooklyn-based artist Stefan Hoza drew inspiration from the act of painting itself. In 'Drawer', a lone figure appears to sit in the middle of the composition, holding an enormous pencil. The figure paints himself into existence, turning the painting itself into a metaphysical object. 'Drawer', in fact, is, first and foremost, about the experience of painting and the process of building a subject. Additionally, it reveals the self-discovery process for the artist in understanding what the painting will be, and as importantly, who he is, as an artist, and what direction he will take next. Smart as it is humorous, this philosophical painting conjures questions around identity formation and the active role we take in shaping it.
