Inspired by the unpredictability of wet paint, Canadian artist Lucas Biagini uses his medium the way a sculptor handles clay. Lucas cuts, presses, spreads, piles, drips, folds and pushes the paint to move, live and settle across the canvas. In 'First Colors', the artist chose to focus on red and black, the two shades that the human eye is first able to discern. The primal nature of the painting--in which the artist slices the surface to release the paint build-up belying it--is thus enforced by the primary experience of the color. Part performance, part sculpture and part painting, 'First Colours' is a fleshy composition of tone on an invitingly tactile surface.
