Inspired by an exhibition devoted to the cutouts of Henri Matisse, Israeli artist Shai Azoulay chose to employ the whimsical, biomorphic forms in his own paintings, albeit to different means. In the current painting, part of a larger body of work in which the artist examines, imagines and playfully redefines the artist's space, Shai presents a lone figure--the artist--standing in the middle of a room, his back turned to the viewers. In each hand is an oversize leafy cutout--or wing--which propel the artist to flap his arms in an effort to soar. Surrounded by a massive, dreamlike canopy of similarly shaped wings, the protagonist in the painting keeps his dreams of flight near and dear, signaling an imminent successful takeoff.
