Brazilian artist Pedro Caetano is intrigued by the German Post-War giants, particularly Sigmar Polke and Martin Kippenberger. For the artist, there is pleasure in revisiting the utopian kitsch of Pop Culture with irony. Pedro employs seemingly familiar figures and symbols--in this instance, the simple cartoonish outline of a young girl enjoying a cone of ice cream--and layers them with paint while borrowing from his own trove of symbols (the artist is keen on personifying frozen treats and other fruit). The final image yields a bridge between nostalgia and reality. 'Gelateria Paradiso' is less about capturing the likeness of a beloved ice-cream parlor from one's childhood as much as capturing the remembered sensation with levity and fondness.
