At an early age, Chella Man realized that he could not find role models who reflected his own life. Chella, who is Chinese and Jewish, identifies as Deaf, genderqueer and trans-masculine. From that point on, therefore, the precocious Chella worked at embodying the adage 'become what you wish to see in others.' Yet, for having such an astute understanding of the world around him--and the systems of power that often favor the status quo--Chella was also made hyperaware of the unjust structures existing within minority communities. 'Horizontal Hostility' addresses these intra-group systems of discrimination and prejudice, giving the artist the opportunity to openly and boldly critique the hypocrisy experienced within systems that purport to protect but perpetuate pre-existing power dynamics. It comes as no surprise that the artist has been repeatedly recognized for his activism, garnering him recognition for the visibility he has repeatedly and deservedly granted other marginalized members of society.
