Drawing inspiration from the constructs of gender and beauty, Deborah Druick has dedicated her practice exclusively to the depiction of feminine characters. By rendering them faceless and blank, each subject is an archetype onto herself. In the present painting, two women, seemingly identical in nature, appear side by side. As a result of their proximity and meandering hairdos, the negative space between the two emerges as a standalone force, disrupting the deceivingly placid nature of the painting and lending a theatrical flair to the final composition. As a former longtime resident of Chicago, Deborah is influenced by the famed Chicago Imagists, particularly Jim Nutt and Christina Ramberg.
