Australian artist Matt R. Martin is fascinated with the Japanese martial art Jiu-Jitsu. The title of the painting, Kimura (named after the legendary Japanese judoka), describes the specific keylock in which one fighter's arms and legs are simultaneously wrapped around his opponent in a double loop. The painting, drawn from a low vantage point, keeps both of the fighters' faces away from view, and centralizes the dramatic interlocking of musculature and flesh. As a result, the painting is not about the identity of the fighters but about the unexpectedly beautiful compression of flesh. Matt finds beauty in weaving sensuality and intensity, turning his subjects into a nearly abstract knot of muscles.
