Japanese-American artist and curator Sei Smith builds on a history of conceptual artists who have challenged what constitutes a painting, and moreover, the physical experience for the viewer standing in front of it. Relying on (natural and artificial) light and reflections as defining factors within the work, Sei willingly relinquishes control over how his artwork is experienced, lending an ethereal and poetic quality to his works. In 'Red/Yellow_Pain Skin', the artist mounted a skin of colored paint on a blank canvas, with peeks of color reflected off the canvas's bright white surface. As viewers assume different vantage points, the experience of the artwork changes accordingly, allowing the artwork to occupy a space that is as painterly as it is sculptural.
