Spanish artist Juan F. Bejar turns each painting into a door leading to an enigmatic stage. 'Solista', depicting a young girl, is reminiscent of early-nineteenth century portraits by American painter Ammi Phillips. Unlike Phillips, who had been commissioned by wealthy families to capture the likeness of their children while inserting visual clues divulging the family's prosperity, Bejar's 'Solista' is a fictional character, which leads viewers to a fictional narrative for them to construct. Avoiding any direction for interpreting his artwork, the artist lets each viewer come up with their own meaning.
