Artist Tim Buwalda investigates the intersection of nostalgia and beauty, particularly in the automobile industry, where emblems of prestige wind up as 'metal carcasses' on flatbeds, headed to landfills. In the present image, viewers find a deep compression of car parts, like a closeup of a John Chamberlain metal collage, dispelling any associations with mobility, innovation and status the cars may have originally held. Borrowing the title from Langston Hughes iconic 1951 poem, Buwalda's painting meditates on the ephemerality of dreams, and commemorating their altered beauty for posterity.
