In deciding which materials to use for this mixed-media painting, the artist Kiyomi Taylor relied on her part-Japanese background. A close inspection reveals a multiplicity of layers, including origami paper and personal family photos, imbuing the painting with a deeply personal connection. The surface of 'Untitled' marks years of family histories, complex narratives and unshakable love that have all been handed down from the three generations of women depicted in this painting: the artist, her mother, and her grandmother. As intimate as a diary page, 'Untitled' is a love letter to the generations of women before her.
