Seller: Armen Eloyan and Timothy Taylor, London/New York.
Armenian artist Armen Eloyan cites punk, street art, comics and the classic Walt Disney films as some of the early influences on his work. Most importantly, however, is humor, which the artist has been carefully weaving into his paintings throughout his career. In the present painting, the artist creates an oval aura surrounding his subject, alluding to a sense of religious light, or perhaps a theatrical spotlight. The sense of drama is enhanced with the golden and ochre shades forming the background, lending a sense of Flemish Golden Age majesty to the painting. At the center of the painting is a pile of anthropomorphic fruit, allegedly mid-song or whistle, while a tiny fly casually rests on the left stem. By contrasting the subject with its background, Armen instantly injects a comical and endearing energy into an otherwise somber scene, leaving viewers engaged and amused.
