My name is Mariam Magsi. I was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan. I am currently based in Toronto, Canada. My ethnic heritage is Baloch and Punjabi Working in photography, video, performance art and installation, I use food items, inherited garments and textiles, cultural paraphernalia and family archives to unpack themes related to constructions of identity, intergenerational trauma, gender and migration. My projects include artistic and historic investigations into the practice of veiling (Purdah), and ongoing creative explorations of my indigenous, Baloch identity and ancestry, as a woman member of the Baloch, Magsi clan in Pakistan (Daughter of the Tribe), as well as artistic research into the food cultures of South Asia (Dawat Yan Project)
