This work is offered by Anuar Khalifi and The Third Line gallery, Dubai, UAE.
As a self-taught artist born in Spain to Moroccan parents, Anuar Khalifi was raised with a dual awareness, stating: "while I am a proud Arab and Moroccan, I also identify as a Spanish Muslim, and I like to stand in the middle." The artist's identity, therefore, is as informed by his North African Arab heritage as much as his upbringing in Europe, lending him a proficiency in multiple cultures. In creating his paintings, therefore, Khalifi borrows elements from multiple socio-cultural narratives, as well as blending fiction with reality, in presenting tableaus that are rife with symbolism and intrigue. In Mustafa the Expat, the title character stands within a space that blurs the line between inside and outside. Further enhancing the sense of ambivalence is the protagonist's belongings packed and strewn about, providing little clarity as to whether he's on the point of departure or arrival.
